Top Ten Remote Car Starter Myths

Car Starter MythsRemote Starters are among the most popular products sold at Sound World in Green Bay Over the years, we have seen many car starter myths and misconceptions about this exciting product category. Follow along as we dispel the:

Top Ten remote car starter myths

1. A remote car starter will void my car warranty.

The Great Lie: A Remote Start Will Void My Car Warranty

Car WarrantyFor as long as Remote Car starters have been around, the falsehood that “remote starters will void your car warranty” has also been around. It’s plainly and simply not true. A federal law – the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act, passed by Congress in 1975 – that provides: “Warranties, written or implied, cannot be conditioned on the consumer’s use of any article or service identified by brand, trade, or corporate name.”

Car Warranty

You can check out the website the Federal Trade Commission has established HERE.

Basically, the law says that a vehicle manufacturer can’t void your warranty simply because aftermarket parts have been installed or someone other than the dealer performs your service work, unless the manufacturer has been able to convince the FTC that the restriction is in the public interest. This is rare because it’s a very high hurdle to pass!

Shady Sales Tactics

Sometimes, someone trying to void a warranty follows up with a line like, “Well, your warranty will be voided if you buy a remote start from Sound World, but if you buy it from us, your warranty will still exist.” If you hear something like this, you may want to politely turn around and walk away from the person because:

  1. They don’t know what they are talking about.
  2. They are trying to take advantage of you.

What Should You Do?

We’ve had this conversation thousands of times. If an employee at a dealership tells you that your car warranty will be voided if you install a remote start from someplace other than the dealership, ask them to put it in writing. Of the thousands and thousands of times we’ve asked to get it in writing, not once have we seen it put on paper.

Choose Quality Technicians

Installing a remote start system is kind of like integrating a small computer with your car. It requires a highly skilled tecnician to disassemble your vehicle properly, make the right connections using the proper techniques, reassemble the vehicle and verify the integrity of the system afterward. It’s a little bit like surgery on your car. Would you go to a doctor advertising the lowest rates on Craigslist or would you look for a doctor who has the best reputation and a track record of success?

3. Can We Add Diesel Remote Starters? Absolutely!

Diesel Remote StartersIf you own a diesel-powered vehicle, you may have been told that a remote Start won’t work on your engine. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The remote starter experts at Sound World have been installing diesel remote starters longer than anyone in the area. Our staff are factory-trained by Compustar on the proper methods to safely start your diesel-powered vehicle.

A Look Into Diesel Remote Starters

Here is how a typical conversation goes in our store:

“If you had the choice in the middle of winter, would you like to leave your truck running all the time when out running errands for hours and not have to leave a key in it?”

“Yes!”

“I thought so – most other people prefer that. That’s where the options on our Pro-T11 really set it apart from the rest of the crowd, by using its run-time extension feature and stop’n go’features. So, you can go to Menards, put the truck in park, reengage the remote start (without cranking the vehicle, of course!), hop out of the vehicle, lock the door – and the truck keeps running … for 45 minutes! Then, as the timer nears that 45-minute limit, the remote control in your pocket will beep at you, at which time you can restart the timer at 45 minutes again, and do this over and over if you wish.

“You finish your two hours of shopping and go back out to your truck, hit the unlock button while it’s still running, hop in, insert and turn the key, and drive away. All in all, you just spent two hours away from your vehicle and never had to shut down the vehicle. With the other brands, you would have shut it down and started it up to 10 times during that same timeframe.”

Diesel Remote Starters For Trucks AND Cars

Diesel Remote StartersNot only can we start your diesel-powered truck, we can also do cars and SUVs, with the Jetta and Passat being very popular vehicles for us.

Variable Run-Time

On most diesel vehicles, we set the remote start run-time at the maximum of 45 minutes. Of course, if you don’t want it to run that long, we can choose a shorter time or you can turn off the remote start via the remote control. A turbo-timer feature can also be integrated to help cool down your turbo.

4. A remote car start is “bad” for my engine.

In the simplest of terms, a remote start runs your engine the same way the engine runs when you start the vehicle with a key or key fob. When you allow your vehicle to warm up before driving away, the fluids in your engine will lubricate critical engine components better.

5. A remote car starter wastes fuel.

Again, a remote start runs your engine the same way as starting with a key or key fob, using the same amount of fuel. Have you ever noticed that your vehicle runs better once it is warmed up? Chances are the fuel used to warm it up will be offset significantly by the increased efficiency.

6. A remote car starter is “easy” to install.

Modern vehicle electrical systems use some of the most sophisticated electronics available. Everything is networked together. When installed properly, a remote starter works great, but when done improperly, it can cost thousands of dollars in damage. This is not an area Car Starter Mythswhere you want to try and save a few dollars. Go with a pro.

7. I can’t put a remote car starter on my car because of a chip in the key.

Since 1997, Sound World has been safely starting vehicles that use “transponder style” keys. We don’t disable this anti-theft device, but rather work with it.

8. Can someone jump in my car and drive off with it while remote started?

No. All of the safety features present in your vehicle are still there. Things like the shift lock and steering wheel lock are still active, and your doors can be locked. In addition, if you get in the vehicle and press the brake pedal, the remote starter will shut down.

9. I lease a vehicle – can I have a remote start installed?

Absolutely. We will install your automatic starter and, at the end of the lease, can remove it for you and potentially install it in your next vehicle.

10. My car starts with a push button instead of a key.

No problem. There are very few cars on the road today in which we can’t properly interface a remote start. In fact, we specialize in installing remote car starters in vehicles the other guys won’t touch.

Firstech Launches New DroneMobile Skill for Alexa

SEATTLE, WA (06.22.2017) – Firstech, makers of aftermarket remote start and security solutions, has announced the launch of the new DroneMobile Skill for Alexa-enabled devices.

DroneMobile is a connected car solution that gives drivers the ability to lock/unlock, GPS track, and remote start their vehicles using their smartphone. In 2016, Firstech expanded the DroneMobile app to work on wearable devices such as the Apple Watch and Android Wear.

The launch of the Skill for Alexa makes DroneMobile the first aftermarket connected car solution to support voice commands on Alexa-enabled devices. Firstech predicts that DroneMobile will similarly support Google Home devices by mid-Q3 2017.

DroneMobile users that have an active subscription will be able to download the DroneMobile Skill for free. Upon activation, users will be required to create a secret PIN to prevent unauthorized vehicle control. Firstech has stated that remote start features are not yet available and that for the time being, users will be able to lock, unlock, and track their vehicles using the DroneMobile Skill. Amazon has also announced that developers will be able to utilize Alexa alerts in the near future, a feature that would integrate seamlessly with vehicle security and tracking applications.

“We are excited to bring the powerful Alexa engine to DroneMobile,” shares Firstech’s Managing Director, Jason Kaminski, “Alexa is the ultimate controller for connected smart devices, which will add a new level of convenience to something our customers previously had to do with their smartphone or remote control.”

Remote Car Starters: What You Need to Know

If you live anywhere but Los Angeles or Miami, you understand the struggle of sitting in a frozen car on a cold, winter morning. That is, unless you’ve remote started your car.

remote starter, otherwise known as a “car starter”, “auto starter”, or “remote start system”, is an electronic device that allows you to start your vehicle’s engine from outside of your vehicle. Using this device, you can warm up your car on those cold winter mornings, or even cool down your seats during the summer.

How Does It Work?
Remote starters are fairly complex products that require professional installation. In simple terms, a standard remote start system includes two primary components:

1. A controller, or module that is installed inside of your vehicle.

2. A remote that you attach to your keychain and use to start your car.

These two items: the controller and the remote work together to start your car so that your car’s heating or A/C system can “warm up” before you start driving.

Is it Safe for My Car?
Compustar remote car starters are compatible with over 90% of vehicles on the road, including manual-transmissions, diesels, select hybrids, and luxury makes. And more importantly, installing our systems will not affect your vehicle’s manufacturers warranty (Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, 1975).

On top of being safe for your car, Compustar remote starters also have built-in safety features that prevent 100% of car theft. When you remote start your car, your engine is on, but the car cannot be driven unless you have the key physically inside of the vehicle. Otherwise, the moment someone touches the brakes, the vehicle will shut down.

Can I, or my Friend, Install it Ourselves?
If either you or your friend are MECP-certified, professionally-trained 12-volt electricians, then absolutely! Otherwise, leave it to the pros at Sound World Green Bay.

Remote Start Your Vehicle with the Factory Key Fob

Sound World in Green Bay has been a remote start expert for more than 20 years now. One of the common questions we get is, “Can I use my factory key fob to start my car?” The simple answer is “Yes, you can, on many newer models.” But let us explain why you don’twant this as the primary way of starting your car, truck or SUV.

Different Terms Used To Describe This Factory Key Fob Feature

Several popular terms describe using your factory key fob to remote start your car, including triple-lock start and 3x lock start. Here at Sound World, we use the phrase “factory key fob remote start activation.” No matter what you call it, the idea is pretty simple: You press the Lock button on your remote control three times in quick succession, and the remote will activate the automatic starter.

Why We Only Offer It As An Upgrade

Many shops will actively promote doing a remote start with this functionality. We don’t. Here is why.

Your factory key fob has very limited range. After hearing from client after client who had to walk out the door of their house just to remote start their vehicle, we quit offering it as a standalone option. It is our opinion that you bought a starter as a convenience item, so it should be convenient to use. If you have to get up close for it to work, why bother?

Sound World offers remote packages for our systems that will give you a minimum of 10 times the range of a factory fob.  Once you see the minimal cost difference, it will make perfect sense.

If You Hate Extra Items On Your Keys, Buy A DroneMobile

Factory Key FobIf you are the kind of person who thinks there are already too many items on your keychain, the DroneMobile system is perfect for you. It harnesses the power of your smartphone and turns that into your remote control.  It even works with Apple Watch!

A Good Upgrade Option

If your vehicle can support 3x lock control of your remote start, that is a good option to add to one of our systems. In the hot and humid Wisconsin summer, you can use your factory fob to start the engine and engage the A/C to begin cooling it down without needing an extra remote. In a frigidly cold Wisconsin winter, you can use it to warm up your vehicle before going out to it in the morning, during the day, for the ride home or when running errands.
